Márta, the mill-owner, is the lover of the easy-going landowner. The indebted Sebastiano wants to marry the daughter of the rich merchant, Lujza, but to avoid gossip he marries Márta to Pedro, the meek mountain shepherd, who saved his life when he fell into the abyss. Márta confesses everything to her husband, and he generously forgives the fallen woman. Lujza, upon learning that her fiancé has a lover, breaks up with him. Now Sebastiano wants to get Márta back from the shepherd. A scuffle begins. Sebastiano attacks the armless Pedro with a knife, but he gets killed in the scuffle with the murderous tool.
