Pan (S)
1962 · Movie · 23 min. · Netherlands
In this short film by Herman van der Horst, the birds in a wetland area are ruffled out of their day-to-day existence by a boy who is out rowing. When he later swims among them as a conspicuous outsider, the birds attempt to chase him away. He camouflages himself, however, affording him an intimate view of the life of birds in all its joy and sorrow. Back in his boat, the boy enchants the birds using the mellifluous tones of his pan-pipe. Even a pair of enraged swans who had angrily trapped him are transported by his music, and coaxed into an elegant mating ritual.
