Berberian Sound Studio (2012) is set in 1976 and focuses on a budget-conscious, low-quality post-production studio in Italy. This studio is notorious for handling the audio for the most gruesome horror films. Gilderoy, a timid and introverted sound engineer from England, is employed to manage the sound mix for the newest film by renowned horror director, Santini. Plunged from his simple life of local documentaries into a foreign landscape dominated by exploitation, Gilderoy quickly becomes entangled in a sinister world of temperamental actresses, unpredictable technicians, and confusing bureaucracy. As he spends more time mixing screams and the chilling sounds of mutilated vegetables, Gilderoy grows increasingly homesick for his cozy garden shed studio in Dorking. His mother's letters oscillate between mundane gossip and a growing sense of alarm, reflecting the dark magic of Santini’s film. As time and reality blur, Gilderoy spirals into a chaotic vortex of auditory and personal turmoil, forcing him to confront his own demons to survive in an environment defined by exploitation both on and off the screen.
