Harakiri (1962) follows Tsugumo Hanshirō, a destitute rōnin, who arrives at the estate of the Iyi clan requesting to commit ritual suicide (seppuku) in their courtyard. As the clan prepares for the ceremony, they recount a similar incident involving another rōnin, Motome Chijiiwa, whose fate reveals the harsh realities of samurai honor and hypocrisy. Through Tsugumo's interactions and flashbacks, the film unravels a poignant tale of vengeance, justice, and the human cost of rigid societal codes. Directed by Masaki Kobayashi, it critiques the emptiness of feudal traditions and the suffering they inflict.
