South of Wawa (1991) follows the lives of three waitresses—Lizette, Carol, and Cheryl-Ann—who work at Joe's donut shop in the quaint town of Stayner, Ontario. Cheryl-Ann, known for her cheerful demeanor despite her mother's serious illness, sees Lizette as her closest friend. However, Lizette, who is often irresponsible and a source of frustration for their boss Joe, finds Cheryl-Ann irritating. When Carol falls ill, Lizette reluctantly asks Cheryl-Ann to join her, Terry (Lizette's exterminator husband), and Terry's partner Simon on a double date to celebrate Lizette's 35th birthday at a Dan Hill concert in Toronto. Simon, recently broken up with his fiancée Pam, insists on having a date, and Terry, who prefers staying local for a hockey game, won't go without Simon. The night unfolds with unexpected twists, leading each character to reflect on their relationships with one another and the community, including Lizette's younger sister Darlene, who struggles with self-image, and Johnny "The Polak," the enforcer for the local hockey team.
