On December 9, 2020, a terrible fire in Gorg (Spain) in Barcelona metropolitan area, took the lives of at least five people: Baye Gueye (Senegal), Fatoumata Drammeh (Gambia), Djoulde Allah (Gambia), Mame Thierno Wagne (Senegal), and Boubacar Hanne (Senegal) who were living in a squatted warehouse with more than two hundred people who had been dwelling there for more than ten years. The people who were illegally squatting the abandoned warehouse in Gorg were mainly Africans. Many have been living in Spain for many years but they found themselves in a precarious situation and without real opportunities to establish a future for themselves and their families. Most of them come from countries such as Senegal or Gambia, where resources needed to survive are increasingly scarce and so they migrate to Europe in search of a better life.
