Habanece (2003) follows Carlos, a young Spanish film student, as he journeys to Havana with the intention of reuniting with his younger brother, Javier. Javier has pledged to bring to life a long-held dream project of Carlos: a documentary about Afro-Cuban religion. This project was initially started by their father but left incomplete during the revolutionary era when such practices were prohibited. As Carlos delves deeper into the mysterious world of Havana, he encounters a hidden underbelly filled with drug trafficking, prostitution, gambling, dog fighting, and moral dilemmas that challenge his understanding of human dignity.
