Roar (2019) is a compelling debut feature directed by Ryo Katayama, which unfolds two interconnected narratives set in Fukui City, located on Japan's western coast. Following a grave offense committed by his elder sibling, Makoto (Ryo Anraku) flees his home and attaches himself to an enigmatic, mute drifter (portrayed by Katayama) who takes on jobs involving physical altercations. Concurrently, radio host Hiromi (Mie Ota) grapples with her boss's escalating advances, leading to a lackluster romantic involvement, as she searches for authentic love and empathy. As the various forms of violence in both Makoto and Hiromi’s lives intensify, the film reaches a climax where the two strangers must face the violence within themselves and their personal quests for freedom.
