The Gunrunner (1989) is set in 1926 during the Chinese Civil War. A wandering drifter named Ted Beaubien is apprehended and compelled to watch the execution of his beloved girlfriend. Escaping from captivity, Ted dedicates himself to a perilous mission: acquiring firearms from abroad and smuggling them back to exact revenge. Upon returning to his hometown, Ted is dismayed to discover his elderly mother and younger brother George living in poverty. However, his mission is time-sensitive, and he must prioritize securing the weapons. In the process, Ted encounters the alluring nightclub owner Maud Ryan, who connects him with the dangerous gangsters who will supply the artillery. For a gunrunner, falling in love is akin to aiming a pistol at one's own heart and pulling the trigger.
