The tale of the enigmatic Chinese princess and her three riddles captivates opera enthusiasts, while simultaneously, a serial killer stalks the city's gay bars, targeting HIV-positive long-term survivors. Stefan, a young gay medical student from East Germany, arrives in San Francisco for a medical conference, tracing the footsteps of his late father, a prominent AIDS researcher. Stefan is driven by the belief that the HIV virus may have originated from clandestine human experiments conducted in US prisons during the 1970s, a theory proposed by Berlin professor Jakob Segal and propagated by East German state agents. Rumors suggest that secret lists detailing these biological experiments have resurfaced in San Francisco. Stefan's primary contact is murdered in an underground club just before his arrival. Undeterred by the growing hysteria and warnings, Stefan ventures into the city's nightlife. He forms a connection with the mysterious Jeffrey, who is linked to Richard Burroughs, a medical doctor with a keen interest in Stefan's research.
