Anguish (1987) follows the disturbing tale of John, a clumsy and irresponsible optometrist assistant who is fired from his job. His eccentric mother, employing a unique form of hypnosis, compels him to embark on a murderous rampage, beginning with Caroline, the woman responsible for his termination. This gruesome narrative unfolds as a film titled "The Mommy," being screened to a sparse audience in a rundown movie theater in Los Angeles. During the screening, two teenage girls, the assertive Linda and the timid Patty, realize that one of the patrons nearby is a genuine psychopath. As the on-screen John, wielding a scalpel, starts slaughtering theatergoers and staff, removing their eyeballs for his mother's collection, the real-life killer in the audience, equipped with a silenced .38 pistol, begins mimicking the on-screen violence, targeting the patrons and employees of the theater.
