The Old Maid (1939) follows the story of Delia, who chooses to marry wealthy Jim over her initial fiancé, Clem. After their breakup, Clem finds solace in Delia's cousin, Charlotte, and they have a child together. Tragically, Clem perishes in the Battle of Vicksburg, leaving Charlotte to raise their daughter, Tina, as a "foundling." Delia, driven by jealousy, interferes with Charlotte's potential marriage to Jim's brother, Joe, and ultimately takes Tina away from her. Charlotte is left to watch her daughter grow and marry, unable to reveal her true identity.
