Ilya is a weary traveler lost in the winter wilderness. Almost frozen, he suddenly finds himself in front of a sacred tree. He prays to it for help and guidance to the nearest shelter. The tree guides him to a balaghan, a traditional Sakha winter dwelling, where he meets Maappa, a beautiful young woman who lives alone in the balaghan.
