Martin und Hans
2021 · Documentary · 37 min. · United States
Martin Kosleck and Hans Heinrich von Twardowski leave Hitlerian Germany and live a long-lasting relationship. Martin is Jewish, Hans is homosexual. Martin got his first major role in 1934 in Fashions of 1934 by Dieterle, a famous compatriot who emigrated to the United States. Hans, on the other hand, had important collaborations, from Murnau to Lang and Wiene, which date back to the great era of German silent cinema. But as Hans tries to break free from ordinary roles by dedicating himself to the theatre, Martin is increasingly bridled in the parts of the Nazi or of the suspect with an unusual accent. Following the sentimental destinies and the actorial fortunes of the two exiles, Martin und Hans is a further, ingenious chapter in Mark Rappaport's complex revisionist writing of the history of cinema.
