Eleven Samurai (1966) is set in early 19th century Japan, where a high-ranking official named Nariatsu, son of the former Shogun, is on a wild animal hunt. His relentless pursuit leads him to trespass into a neighboring fief, resulting in the accidental killing of a peasant. The lord of that fief, witnessing the incident, confronts Nariatsu, who then kills the lord as well. The government covers up the murder, blaming the dead lord and planning to disband his fief. The deceased lord's samurai refuse to accept this fate and make reckless attempts to avenge their lord. These attempts are thwarted by the dead lord's chamberlain, who uses a contrived sentencing of his own men to commit seppuku to recruit more warriors. Eventually, a group of ten men and one woman are assembled, and later, a ronin joins them. The group patiently waits for the opportune moment to strike against Nariatsu.
