Scout Man
2000 · Movie · 114 min. · Japan
Two well-meaning youngsters find they're cut out for a career in smut in this Japanese comedy-drama. Atsushi (Hideo Nakaizumi) and his girlfriend Mari (Miku Matsumoto) are a young couple who move from the outskirts of Japan to Tokyo in hopes of finding fame and fortune. While looking for a job, Atsushi is introduced to Miki (Yuri Komuro), a woman who works in casting for adult film producers. While Miki at first seems mostly interested in Atsushi, in time she thinks that Mari might have a future in the Japanese porn industry; unlike American porn videos, in Japan filmmakers are forbidden to show explicit sex (or the actors' genitals), so Mari could appear in the videos without having to be entirely unfaithful to Atsushi. As Atsushi attempts to introduce Mari to the world of adult filmmaking, he himself is given a job by producer Sugishita (Shiro Shimomoto) -- as a "Scout-Man" -- who spots attractive women on the street and tries to persuade them to try a career in adult movies. Mari, meanwhile, makes friends with Kana (Yuka Fujimoto), a 15-year-old who makes money by selling tickets to private parties, with Kana and her girlfriends as the main attraction.
