Königskinder (1950) unfolds in 1945, as Princess Ulrike von Brandenburg flees eastward with an elderly uncle and two court attendants, heading towards Bavaria, where the von Brandenburg family still possesses a castle. During their journey, they encounter a low-flying aircraft that forces them to abandon most of their belongings, including a case containing the royal jewels, into a river. Upon reaching Bavaria, they discover that their new residence is a dilapidated castle. The uncle is disoriented and sullen, while the ladies remain nostalgic for a bygone era. Only Princess Ulrike exhibits practicality and humor in adapting to the new circumstances. While searching for employment in a nearby town, she encounters a young man named Paul. The two are soon arrested during a military police raid but quickly form a friendship. Over the following days, various strangers, mostly US soldiers stationed locally with their German girlfriends, begin to visit the castle as early tourists. Paul swiftly realizes that the castle ruin can generate income by charging visitors for their curiosity. He oversees the repair of historical artifacts, the ladies create souvenirs, and Ulrike serves as the castle guide.
