Königskinder
1950 · Movie · 95 min. · Germany - West Germany (FRG)
It's 1945, and the princess Ulrike von Brandenburg is on the run to the west, with an old uncle and two court ladies, to Bavaria, where the von Brandenburgs still own a castle. Along the way they get under fire from a low-flying aircraft and lose most of their luggage in a river, together with the case with the crown jewels. Arriving in Bavaria, von Brandenburg finds that their new home is a castle ruin. The uncle is confused and pouts, the ladies are still caught up in a vanished time, only the Princess has enough realism and humor to the changed situation. On a walk into town looking for a job she meets a young man named Paul. The two get arrested in a military police raid, and soon make friends. In the following days, repeatedly strangers appear at the castle, mostly locally stationed US soldiers with their German girlfriends, as the first tourists. Paul understands very quickly that the castle ruin can generate a small income by letting the visitors pay for their curiosity. He takes care of the repair of the historical armor and the like, the ladies of the court make souvenirs and Ulrike acts as castle guide.
