A Mormon Maid (1917)

A Mormon Maid (1917) unfolds during the 1840s, amidst the westward journey of the Mormons. The story revolves around Dora, a young woman whose family is rescued from an Indian assault by a Mormon community en route to Utah. They decide to join the wagon train. Dora finds herself the object of affection from two men: a new convert and a cunning elder with multiple wives. The elder has designs on adding Dora to his household. Tragedy strikes when Dora's mother takes her own life, horrified by the prospect of polygamy. This leaves Dora to ponder her own destiny and the man she truly loves. Directed by Robert Leonard and starring Mae Murray, this silent film was initially conceived as a nuanced exploration of the complexities within Mormonism. However, it is now widely regarded as anti-Mormon propaganda.
