Deep River (1995) follows the journey of three Japanese travelers who find themselves in India, each with a unique quest. Miss Naruse seeks out Otsu, a Catholic priest who was her lover a decade ago, now residing in Benares where he performs the solemn task of transporting the deceased to the crematorium. Despite their past, she is captivated by his spiritual depth. Mr. Isobe is on a mission to find a village child who he believes is the reincarnation of his late wife. Meanwhile, Mr. Yagusi travels to offer prayers for the man who saved his life during World War II, a man burdened by the methods he used to rescue his comrade. The film interweaves themes of pantheism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christianity along the sacred banks of the Ganges.
