Haunted and confused by her nightmares involving her mother's death, college research assistant Molly Duggan (Haylie Duff) takes a job at a sleep disorder center. Molly discovers that for generations her family has been plagued by sleep disorders and deprivation caused by similar and recurring violent dreams. As Molly's dream investigation deepens, her sleep condition degenerates, as one night she suddenly encounters the Night Hag, a horrible nightmare creature who also begins to attack others close to Molly in their sleep. Now, scared to sleep and desperate, Molly knows that confronting the Night Hag by "crossing over" into the spirit world is her only chance to lift the curse that has tormented her family and is now killing her friends.
