Young Elena lives with her elderly aunts in the family house in Bobbio. Mom Sara visits from Milan when not working as an actress, though uncle Giorgio feels she should be more hands-on in her daughter's upbringing. Segments from 1999, 2004 and 2005 develop the story and highlight the difficulties when traditional roots rub against the struggle to carve out an independent life. Brief clips from Bellocchio's films nicely connect characters with earlier themes.
