The Breaks (1999) follows the story of Derrick, an Irish white boy raised by a black family in Los Angeles. Derrick's unique upbringing leads him to identify strongly with his adoptive culture, believing himself to be black. His life takes a dramatic turn when his mother discovers him in a compromising romantic situation on her couch, resulting in her giving him an ultimatum and kicking him out of the house.
