A Crazy Day (1960) follows the story of Roman, a twenty-year-old man from a rundown suburb, who is unemployed and responsible for supporting his 20-day-old child and the child's mother. Over the course of a single day, Roman searches for work, secures a questionable job, gets deceived, and ultimately resorts to stealing a ring from a deceased individual. When questioned by his family about the source of the money, he assures them, "I didn't harm a living soul." The film draws inspiration from Alberto Moravia's "Roman Tales" (1954) and "New Roman Tales" (1959), and is more closely associated with the styles of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Mauro Bolognini than with Moravia's original works. The narrative carries a Catholic moral theme, emphasizing redemption through the fulfillment of basic duties, albeit delivered with a light and graceful touch. The film was originally cut to 92 minutes upon its release.
