Zelly and Me (1988) tells the story of a young orphan residing in a sprawling Virginian mansion with her grandmother, who becomes deeply captivated by the tales of Joan of Arc. As the orphan's nanny recognizes the grandmother's harsh treatment and lack of affection, she turns to a wealthy suitor, played by David Lynch in his first significant acting role, for assistance. The nanny hopes that this suitor can provide a better life for both herself and the orphan. The narrative culminates in an unexpected and surprising plot twist.
