8MM (1999) follows Tom Welles, a private investigator, who is approached by a wealthy widow after the recent passing of her prominent husband. She discovers a reel of S8 film in a safe, revealing a disturbing and authentic snuff film depicting the brutal murder of a young girl. Driven by a sense of justice, Welles embarks on a perilous investigation that leads him to the victim's mother and eventually to the seedy underbelly of Hollywood, where he encounters a notorious pornographic film producer. As Welles becomes increasingly consumed by his quest for the truth, his personal life begins to unravel, straining his relationship with his wife and newborn daughter. However, as he closes in on the identities behind the horrific footage, Welles finds himself entangled in a web of danger far more treacherous than he ever imagined.
