Lou (2010) unfolds in the rural landscapes of New South Wales, where Rhia, a single mother from a working-class background, grapples with financial struggles and the challenges of raising three young daughters. The eldest daughter, Lou, who has matured beyond her years, holds a deep resentment towards Rhia for the absence of her father, who left a decade ago and has not been seen since. The strained relationship between mother and daughter reaches a critical point when Rhia decides to take in Doyle, her father-in-law, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Doyle's presence initially meets with Lou's hostility, but his captivating stories of his South Seas adventures gradually win her over. However, Doyle's mind is deeply affected by fragmented memories of his late wife, Annie. As his condition worsens, Doyle begins to see Annie in Lou and imagines himself wooing her once again.
