The Last Gangster (1937) follows the story of Joe Krozac, a notorious mob boss with an outsized ego and a reputation for ruthlessness in the criminal underworld. When his territory is threatened by the Kile Brothers, Joe's response is swift and brutal, leaving no room for mercy. After a luxurious trip to Europe with his new wife, Talya, Joe is overjoyed to learn she is expecting a child, envisioning his son as the future leader of his criminal empire. However, Joe's world takes a dramatic turn when he is sentenced to ten years in Alcatraz for tax evasion. The harsh realities of prison life and the constant threat from his enemies take a toll on Joe. When Talya hesitates to bring their son to visit him in prison, Joe's anger boils over, leading to their divorce. Talya and her new husband live in fear of the day Joe is released, as does the surviving Kile brother, who knows the danger Joe poses.
