Amistad (1997) follows the harrowing journey of a slave ship, the Amistad, as it sails from Cuba to the United States in 1839. The vessel carries a group of Africans who were forcibly sold into slavery in Cuba and confined in the ship's cargo hold. During the voyage, Cinque, a former tribal leader from Africa, orchestrates a rebellion and seizes control of the ship. The rebels continue their journey, hoping to find assistance upon reaching land. However, upon arrival in the United States, they are arrested and imprisoned as fugitive slaves. Unable to communicate in English, their fate seems bleak as they face charges for the murder of their captors. Their situation takes a turn when an abolitionist lawyer takes up their cause, arguing that they were free individuals from another nation, not slaves. The legal battle escalates to the Supreme Court, where John Quincy Adams delivers a powerful and persuasive argument for their freedom.
