Rome: Free City (1946) unfolds in the chaotic aftermath of World War II, where a skilled cat burglar's life takes an unexpected turn when he accidentally prevents a war veteran from taking his own life. The soldier, disillusioned and betrayed by his fiancée during his time at war, finds an unlikely mentor in the thief. Together, they embark on a wild night through the streets of Rome, encountering a diverse cast of characters, including a hard-up typist turned street dweller, an amnesiac wandering the city in search of his identity, and a colorful array of thieves, gamblers, prostitutes, policemen, and soldiers. The night is filled with endless cigarettes and espresso, as the two men navigate the complexities of post-war Rome.
