Whirlpool (1934) follows the life of Buck Rankin, a carnival owner who ties the knot with a local woman named Helen. Buck's plans to turn over a new leaf are derailed when a fight leads to a manslaughter conviction and a twenty-year prison sentence. Helen, who is expecting a child, pledges to wait for him. However, Buck, fearing the burden he places on Helen, fakes his own death by forging a letter from the warden's office. Two decades later, Buck is released from prison, adopts a new identity as "Duke Sheldon," and rises to become a nightclub owner with mob connections. Meanwhile, Helen has remarried a local judge, and their daughter Sandra has become a journalist. When Sandra is assigned to cover a high-profile trial where Duke Sheldon is providing an alibi for a mobster, she uncovers Buck's true identity. The revelation leads to an emotional reunion between father and daughter. Buck now faces a dilemma: testify at the trial, which would expose his identity and Helen's unintentional bigamy, or refuse to testify, protecting Helen and Sandra but risking the wrath of the mob.
