Passing (2021) follows Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson), a sophisticated woman from the 1920s upper class, who seeks respite from the summer heat in the elegant tearoom of New York City’s Drayton Hotel. Her tranquility is disrupted when she notices a fair-haired woman gazing at her. Irene attempts to leave, but Clare Kendry (Ruth Negga) approaches her before she can. The two women were classmates in high school and share a secret: both are African American women who can "pass" as white, but they have made contrasting choices regarding their racial identities. Their unexpected reunion poses a threat to both of their lives.
