Just a Gigolo (1931) follows the story of a jovial British aristocrat, portrayed by Haines, who finds himself in a situation where his family has planned a marriage for him. To get to know the intended bride better and to assess her true nature, he travels to a European summer retreat and assumes the guise of a gigolo. This disguise allows him to observe and interact with her in a more candid setting, applying what he refers to as the "acid test.
