Poppy (1936) follows the tale of a young woman, Poppy, who is the daughter of a traveling carnival medicine salesman, Professor McGargle. Poppy's life takes an unexpected turn when she develops feelings for the Mayor's son. Meanwhile, Countess Maggie Tubbs DePuizzi asserts her claim to the Putnam estates, but McGargle and lawyer Wiffen devise a scheme to have Poppy inherit the fortune instead. Wiffen and the Countess betray the Professor, but the kind-hearted Sarah Tucker observes a striking resemblance between Poppy and the late Mrs. Putnam. It is revealed that McGargle had adopted Poppy, making her the legitimate heir. The supposed Countess is exposed as a mere showgirl, and ultimately, everyone finds happiness.
