Convict 99 (1938) follows the misadventures of Benjamin Twist, a former educator whose reputation has been tarnished. Mistakenly identified as a stern prison warden, he is tasked with overseeing a notorious penitentiary housing some of the most dangerous criminals. Under the impression that he is being sent to a school rather than a prison, Twist celebrates with enthusiasm. However, his revelry leads to a mishap that results in him being inadvertently incarcerated within the very prison he was supposed to govern.
