In & Out (1997) follows the life of Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline), a beloved high-school English teacher and sports coach in the small town of Greenleaf, IN. Howard's life seems perfect: he has a close-knit family, a supportive community, and an upcoming wedding to his fiancée Emily (Joan Cusack), who has worked hard to lose 75 pounds for their special day. The town gathers to watch the Academy Awards, where former student Cameron Drake (Matt Dillon) wins an Oscar and publicly out Howard as gay during his acceptance speech. This revelation sends shockwaves through Greenleaf, leaving Howard and the community in turmoil. As the media, led by Peter Malloy (Tom Selleck), descends on the town, Howard struggles to convince everyone, including himself, that he is straight. Meanwhile, Cameron returns to Greenleaf to help Howard navigate the chaos, while Howard's mother (Debbie Reynolds) desperately tries to ensure at least one of her sons gets married. As the wedding date approaches, Howard's life spirals further out of control.
