One Hour to Live (1939) presents John Litel in an atypical role, stepping away from his usual portrayal of steadfast businessmen and upright attorneys to embody the character of Rudy Spain, a corrupt fight manager. Spain orchestrates the assassination of a boxer (Jack Carr) who has chosen the path of integrity. To keep his hands clean, Spain delegates the grim task to his menacing henchman, Stanley Jones (Paul Guilfoyle), ensuring his own innocence remains unquestioned—at least in the eyes of everyone except police lieutenant Sid Brady (Charles Bickford). Brady, still nursing a grudge over Spain's past romantic conquest of his girlfriend Muriel (Doris Nolan), is determined to bring Spain to justice. Spain's attempts to eliminate Muriel ultimately backfire, revealing him to be just a minor player in a vast criminal network. When Lt. Brady uncovers the true mastermind behind the operation, both he and the audience are in for a shocking revelation.
