A Free Soul (1931) follows the story of Stephen Ashe, a high-society attorney with a drinking problem, who triumphantly defends notorious gangster Ace Wilfong in a high-stakes murder trial. Complications arise when Stephen's daughter, Jan Ashe, abruptly ends her engagement to wealthy polo player Dwight Winthrop and becomes entangled in a tumultuous relationship with Wilfong. Jan soon realizes that extricating herself from this dangerous liaison is far from simple. Winthrop, driven by his love for Jan, takes drastic measures by eliminating Wilfong, hoping to free Jan from his influence. The narrative reaches a critical point as the audience wonders whether Stephen Ashe can deliver a compelling defense to secure Winthrop's acquittal.
