The wealthy house tyrant hat maker Cederström has two daughters, Marianne and Lotte. He has decided to marry Marianne to estate-owner Melander although she loves the poet Malm - and despite the fact that Lotte is the one who is fond of the estate-owner. The poet argues that Cederström is greedy, and facing that accusation the hat maker decides to throw a tremendous ball for his daughters. To impress the guests he starts a complete renovation of his home, resulting in a series of comic trouble for himself.
