Glory (1989) chronicles the valor of a group of Civil War soldiers frequently overlooked by history—the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, a unit of free black men who battled to secure freedom for their enslaved brethren. Inspired by the historical novels "One Gallant Rush" by Peter Burchard and "Lay This Laurel" by Lincoln Kirstein, as well as the letters of Robert Gould Shaw, the film traces the journey of the young Colonel Shaw (Matthew Broderick) as he prepares these soldiers for combat. Shaw, a privileged young Bostonian, faces unexpected challenges as many of the men resist his authority. Private Trip (Denzel Washington) is particularly defiant, but over time, the two develop a mutual respect amidst the trials of war. On July 18, 1863, Shaw volunteers the 54th for the perilous mission of leading the assault on Fort Wagner, a task that almost guarantees death, with Trip carrying the regiment's colors into battle. This gritty and realistic portrayal of war's horrors is a poignant and critical exploration of a forgotten chapter in history. Masterfully shot and powerfully acted (with a cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, and Andre Braugher), director Edward Zwick's film pays homage to the bravery and selfless courage of the black soldiers of the Civil War.
