The Marseillaise (1938) is a cinematic journey inspired by the brief yet impactful Popular Front government, featuring Pierre Renoir as Louis XVI. This film, directed by Jean Renoir, offers a unique perspective from the common people, chronicling the French Revolution from the fall of the Bastille in 1789 to the king's departure from his palace in 1792. As news of the Bastille's fall spreads to rural areas, the peasantry finds the courage to challenge injustice. Jean-Joseph Bomier (Edmond Ardisson), previously outlawed by the regime, sees an opportunity to reintegrate into society. Revolutionaries, frustrated by the aristocrats still commanding town forts, employ a Trojan Horse strategy to seize the fort at Marseilles. Near the Austrian border, revolutionaries attempt to rally troops to confront the formidable Prussian army outside Paris, with Bomier joining the ragged army as it marches north. During a leave in Paris, he falls in love with Louison (Nadia Sibirskaia), and together they envision a political satire that deepens the divide between the king and his people. This film is renowned for its stirring realism, beautiful cinematography, and exceptional performances.
