The 8-Year Engagement (2017) follows the story of Hisashi, a resident of Okayama, who encounters Mai at a restaurant gathering. Initially, Mai is put off by Hisashi's gloomy demeanor, but after he explains his discomfort due to illness, she feels remorseful and bids him farewell warmly. Their paths cross again, leading to a romantic relationship. After several months, Hisashi, despite his timid nature, musters the courage to propose to Mai, marking the beginning of their journey together.
