Nostalgia (1990) unfolds in the 1930s within the Soviet Armenia landscape. Arakel Aloyan, an innocent peasant, fled his homeland in Western Armenia following the Armenian genocide of 1915, where he witnessed his village's destruction and the atrocities committed against its women. Despite the family's efforts to help Arakel adapt to his new life, he remains haunted by nostalgia. One restless night, after experiencing a vision, Arakel ventures across the Soviet-Turkish border to revisit his village, driven by a desire "to visit the tombs of my parents, to kiss the remaining walls of our village church." He reconnects with old Kurdish friends during his journey. Upon his return, he is apprehended by the NKVD (Soviet state security) on charges of "spying against the nation," leading to his tragic demise on a train bound for exile in Siberia.
