When California Highway Patrol officer and war veteran Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) discovers a crime scene, it attracts Vinci Police Department detective Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell) and Ventura County Sheriff's Office CID Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) to the investigation. Also involved is Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn), a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of his business partner.
