Desperado (1995) follows the tale of Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida), a prosperous yet ruthless drug lord who governs a grimy Mexican border town. Bucho and his henchmen inadvertently provoke El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas), a former musician who now conceals a deadly arsenal within his guitar case. Bucho's past actions, which include the murder of El Mariachi's girlfriend and a bullet wound to his fretting hand, have left El Mariachi unable to play the guitar. Driven by a thirst for vengeance, the musician-turned-assassin arrives in town to dismantle Bucho's operations. Along the way, he finds little support except from Carolina (Salma Hayek), who operates a bookstore that sees few customers.
