The Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach

First full-length feature film by the French filmmaking duo of Straub and Huillet. The film presents biography as the rewriting and juxtaposition of prior documents with a prominent importance of music, which was performed and recorded during the filming rather than dubbed. Defined in this way, through a range of documents, Bach does not emerge as a conventional dramatic character. In fact, Straub has said that the music was considered the basic raw material of the film, and not simply background accompaniment. The film stars renowned arpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt as Bach, but back then still unknown.
