Andaz (1949) centers around Nina, a wealthy and indulged young woman who is the daughter of a prosperous businessman. During a horse-riding incident, she loses control of her horse and is saved by a charming young man named Dilip. Dilip is immediately captivated by Nina and begins to visit her home frequently, where he and Nina's friend Sheela entertain her with their singing. Nina's father, however, is displeased with this arrangement and attempts to caution Nina about the potential misunderstandings that could arise from her close friendship with Dilip. On the day of Sheela's birthday celebration, Dilip confesses his love for Nina, but tragedy strikes when Nina's father succumbs to a heart attack. Dilip tries to comfort Nina and reveal his true feelings, but his efforts are interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Nina's fiancé, Rajan, who has just returned from London. Dilip is taken aback to learn that Nina had been engaged to Rajan all along and had never mentioned it.
