The Doll (1968) unfolds in the bustling 19th-century Warsaw, where the lethargy of the aristocracy, content with their pensions and unwilling to take on new business ventures, irks Wokulski. Despite his financial acumen being acknowledged, his lack of family lineage and social standing is met with disdain. His clandestine assistance to "the doll's" financially struggling but influential father leads to the girl's realization of his affection. Ultimately, she agrees to be with him, but without genuine love.
