Doctor at Sea (1955) follows the journey of a young physician, Simon Sparrow, who seeks to avoid the monotony of his general practice and unwanted romantic advances by taking up a position as a medical officer on "the Lotus," an all-male cargo vessel. Upon boarding, Simon encounters a colorful cast of characters, including the stern, whiskey-loving Captain Hogg, and finds himself in a series of awkward situations, such as battling seasickness. In Rio de Janeiro, he meets Hélène Colbert, a captivating French singer, and becomes smitten with her. When Captain Hogg, who has a strong aversion to women, is compelled to accommodate two female passengers—Muriel Mallet, the daughter of the shipping company, and her companion Hélène—on his ship, Simon is thrilled by the unexpected turn of events.
