Sunshine in the Old Neighborhood (1963) follows the life of Machiko (Chieko Baisho), who resides peacefully with her father, grandmother, and two younger siblings in the heart of Shitamachi. She works diligently at a cosmetics factory, finding contentment in her daily routine. Her boyfriend, Michio (Tamotsu Hayakawa), aspires to secure a stable, salaried job and envision a future in the suburbs. However, Machiko starts to ponder whether embracing a middle-class lifestyle will truly fulfill her and bring her the happiness she seeks.
