Made in Heaven (1952) unfolds in the charming market town of Dunmow, England, renowned for the Dunmow Flitch, a whimsical contest where married couples vie to prove their unwavering fidelity over a year and a day. The victorious pair is rewarded with a generous flitch of bacon, a particularly prized commodity in the post-war period. The Topham family, residents of Dunmow for fifteen years, are still viewed as outsiders by the town's traditionalists, notably Miss Rosabelle Honeycroft, the assertive sister of the mild-mannered vicar, Hayworth Honeycroft. Miss Honeycroft is displeased when Marjorie Topham nominates her son, Basil Topham, and his wife, Julie Topham, as the sole participants in the year's Flitch contest. Basil and Julie's early married life is far from idyllic; they reside with Basil's parents, Marjorie and Aubrey Topham, and Basil's grandfather, Hillary Topham, while their new home is under construction by local builder Stanley.
